2. Beach Fossils · ‘Somersault’ · Bayonet Records

Indie Rock

After four years, the new Beach Fossils album has finally arrived! With Somersault, the group’s first release since 2013’s Clash the Truth, Beach Fossils have channeled years of experimentation into expansion and reinvention. Augmented with more complex instrumentation, including string arrangements, piano, harpsichord, flute, and sax, the new songs offer multi-layered pop guided by sharp, poignant, and honest lyrics.

Formed in 2009, Beach Fossils was originally a means to expand the solo project of Dustin Payseur. That same year bassist John Peña and guitarist Christopher Burke were recruited as the lineup for their initial tour. Their debut single, Daydream/Desert Sand was released in February 2010 on Captured Tracks. In May 2010, their self-titled debut album was released, met with favorable reviews. Shortly after, Beach Fossils released a string of 7" singles followed by the What a Pleasure EP in March, 2011.

The following years saw a number of changes to their live lineup, including when John Peña left the band in 2011 to form Heavenly Beat, and guitarist Cole Smith, who left for his solo project, DIIV. In 2010, Tommy Gardner stepped in as the drummer, and in 2012 Tommy Davidson joined on guitar and Jack Doyle Smith on bass to form their current lineup. Clash the Truth was released in early 2013, peaking at number 40 on the Independent Albums chart.

3. Marika Hackman · ‘I'm Not Your Man’ · Sub Pop

Indie Folk

I’m Not Your Man, her forth album, Sub Pop Debut, and the Charlie Andrew (Alt-J, Rae Morris)-produced second album from Marika Hackman, begins with an impromptu hearty laugh. It’s not the sound of silliness; it’s the sound of liberation, spontaneity, and joy. 24-year-old Hackman is feeling more herself than ever. Life isn’t necessarily funnier or happier, but when there’s cause for a joke or a big ballsy statement, she’s not holding back any more.

The album took almost 18 months to complete, during which time Hackman switched to a new manager and a new label, transitions that yielded new avenues for exploration, a lot of time, and a lot of distance – mainly, she insists, from self-imposed boundaries.

4. Amber Arcades · ‘Cannonball’ · Heavenly

Alternative/Indie Rock

Amber Arcades follow up last years debut record Fading Lines with a new EP.

The Cannonball EP opens with Amber Arcades’ reworking of the classic Nick Drake song, Which Will (from his seminal 1972 album Pink Moon) featuring her trademark ethereal, hazy, krautrock sound. It Changes follows, which is possibly Amber Arcades’ most irresistible and compelling pop single to date. The EP features three brand new tracks in the form of Can’t Say That We Tried, Wouldn’t Even Know (featuring Bill Ryder-Jones on vocals) and the title track, Cannonball. The artwork was shot by Nick Helderman who has photographed all of Amber Arcades’ artwork and photos to date.
