Jim Morrison, John Lennon, Johnny Cash, Ray Charles, Bob Dylan… and now Morrissey. According to Aristotle’s Logic, if you are a music genius you will have a film about your life.
England Is Mine (in cinemas august 4) is the name of the unauthorised Steven Patrick Morrissey biopic. This portrait of Morrissey and his early life in 1970’s Manchester, before he went on to become lead singer of seminal 80’s band The Smiths, explores his musical influences, ambition, disappointments, depression and creativity, ending just as he and guitarist Johnny Marr finally get together with a view to setting up a band.
The title comes from The Smiths’ classic hit Still Ill (“England is mine, and it owes me a living. Ask me why and I’ll spit in your eye”), written by Morrissey and Marr.
