Bruce Springsteen and David Bowie lead biggest Record Store Day

Vinyl sales in the in the US, where 733,000 vinyl albums were bought in the week ending 26 April, a record for Record Store Day week, and the third-largest weekly sum for vinyl albums since Nielsen Music began tracking sales in 1991. It was the same in the UK, with 60,000 albums and 30,000 singles changing hands, according to the Official Charts Company.

Bruce Springsteen’s Greatest Hits and David Bowie’s Welcome To The Blackout were among the most in-demand releases and helped Record Store Day reach a new peak in 2018.

Other popular Record Store Day exclusives included Neil Young’s Tonight’s the Night Live at the Roxy and Pink Floyd’s The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn.

In the week ending April 26, in the US, vinyl album sales were up 190 percent compared to the prior week (733,000 vs. 253,000), with 98 percent of that gain coming from independent record stores. That’s the biggest week ever for vinyl album sales during a Record Store Day week, and the largest week for vinyl albums outside of the Christmas season since Nielsen Music began tracking sales in 1991.
