Vinylradar has selected this week new releases for you. Enjoy!

1. Cende · ‘#1 Hit Single’ · Double Double Whammy

Indie Pop

Cende was born halfway through a laundry cycle in the year 2013. Cameron Wisch, Dave Medina, and Greg Rutkin had all just graduated from Purchase College and moved into Brooklyn house venue David Blaine’s The Steakhouse. Bonding over their mutual admiration for punk band The Marked Men, the trio began performing at DBTS and other local venues. They were soon joined by friend Bernard Casserly and became a more serious project after the self-release of their first EP in 2015.

The band centers around the two principal songwriters of Wisch and Medina. Wisch’s infectious melodies and meticulous song structures are complemented by Medina’s raw and highly energetic punk anthems.

Expanding on the catchy, power-pop songs of their debut EP, Cende’s first full-length album, #1 Hit Single, sees the band experimenting with more varied instrumentation and detailed production. The album was spearheaded by Wisch, who spent over a year carefully sculpting the album alongside producer, engineer, and friend Ronnie Stone. The end result is a compact and emotional batch of songs that draw influence from personal relationships, bizarre dreams, and the experiences surrounding the members’ lives during three years of living downstairs in a creative and chaotic DIY space. #1 Hit Single is out May 26th via Double Double Whammy.
There are two limited editions on coloured vinyl (Grimace Purple 500 units and Aqua Blue another 500 copies) available to order through the link below.

2. Burning Hearts · ‘Battlefields’ · Solina Records

Indie Pop

Finnish indie pop stalwarts Burning Hearts (Jessika Neuman and Henry Neuman) are back! A dreamy electro folk pop band specialised in writing timeless songs with beautiful female harmonies, poetrylike lyrics and a sound closely attached to nature. Their first album ‘Aboa Sleeping’ and second album ‘Extinctions’ have received tremendous amounts of love and listening and has taken the band to New York, Paris, Hamburg and the major venues in Finland. Extinctions was even VICE´s Best album of the month at that time and now with two critically acclaimed albums, a host of packed-out festival appearances and a formidable dose of musical experience already under their belts, these Finns are a real force to be reckoned with. Let´s hope Burning Hearts gets the attention it deserves with their new releases. Jessica and Henry have done the hard yards and gifted us with expertly crafted pop gems, now its the turn of purveyors of independent pop music to repay the favour.

New album Battlefields and singles “Work of Art” (see video), “Bodies as Battlefields” and “In My Garden” mixed by Tomas Bodén (who has mixed also latest Radio Dept. album “Running Out of Love”) and mastering by Svenska grammofonstudion.

3. Pet Symmetry · ‘Vision’ · Polyvinyl Record Company

Emo Punk

Pet Symmetry started with the best and simplest of intentions: as an excuse to goof off. In 2013, the band’s three members, Evan Weiss (Into It. Over It.), Erik Czaja (Dowsing) and Marcus Nuccio (What Gives), started kicking around ideas that were lighthearted in nature of their full-time projects. Almost by accident, the result of their collective fun morphed into something real, and became Pet Symmetry.

The Chicago three-piece has made its live show a tight budget spectacle, often performing in matching Hawaiian shirts, varsity jackets, or black metal makeup. Their tongue-in-cheek nature is also proudly on display with their releases, from their incredibly descriptively titled EP, Two Songs About Cars. Two Songs With Long Titles., to their canine-themed nod to the Beach Boys on their 2015 debut album, Pets Hounds.

While Vision, the band’s first release with long-running indie label Polyvinyl Records, adopts the moodiness and heartfelt tones its creators are best known for, there’s an underlying sense of playful snarkiness behind it all. Its 11 songs are fully embraced by their Pet Symmetry alter egos in an anything goes mentality.

The album, recorded at Gradwell House in New Jersey by Dave Downham (Beach Slang, Pattern Is Movement), is volatile when it wants to be, but self-aware and sarcastic enough to pull it off without venturing into excessively sentimental territory. One song, “Lint Roller,” describes the desire to switch places with a lazy cat, reminiscent of The Weakerthans’ classic “A Plea from a Cat Named Virtue.” Another, “You & Me & Mt. Hood,” sees Weiss coasting down a Portland mountain into a gas station on an empty tank, an apt metaphor for life if ever there was one.
